Purple, Green and Yellow Sea Moss: Why We Chose Purple

How purple, green and yellow sea moss differ in pigment, drying and strengths, and why purple anchors our Respiratory line.

At Everwild Apothecary, the color of our sea moss is never cosmetic. Purple, green and yellow (or gold) each reflect a different pigment, a different harvest and drying method and a different set of strengths. When we set out to formulate our Respiratory line, we asked one question: which sea moss does the most to support healthy airways and lungs at the root, not just at the surface?

After weighing all three, the answer was purple. Here is how each color contributes and why purple earns its place as the foundation of our formulas.

What every sea moss shares

All true sea mosses are rich in mucilage, the soft, gel-forming polysaccharides (including carrageenan-type fibers) that give sea moss its signature texture. Mucilage is soothing to mucous membranes, which is why sea moss has a long folk history as a throat, chest and airway tonic. That soothing quality is the shared baseline across all three colors. Everything that sets them apart comes from the pigment and minerals each one carries.

Yellow or gold: sun-bleached and mineral-dense

Yellow is what most people picture when they think of sea moss, because it is the most abundant type on the market. It is made by leaving the moss in direct, open sunlight for extended periods, which intentionally bleaches away the purple and green pigments. What remains is a concentrated mineral profile, especially potassium chloride, along with dense iodine and selenium. It also has a mild flavor and low odor, which makes it easy to take daily.

Its mineral salts are traditionally valued for supporting the body's natural respiratory comfort, which is why it is the color we chose for our respiratory formula.* The trade-off is built into how it is made. The same sun-bleaching that creates the clean flavor also removes the antioxidant pigments.

Green: shade-dried and chlorophyll-rich

Green sea moss is harvested from shallower, sun-drenched waters and dried quickly in low heat or shade to lock in live chlorophyll before it can bleach. Chlorophyll is its dominant compound, and its strengths are oxygen-related. Green supports tissue oxygenation and gut microbiome health.* Since respiration is about moving oxygen into the blood and the lungs are highly vascular, that angle is genuinely relevant.

Its benefits are largely systemic and downstream. Better oxygen transport helps the whole body, the lungs included, but it does not specifically target the delicate airway lining. Green is a superb whole-body supporter, in a supporting role rather than the lead.

Purple: shade-dried and anthocyanin-rich

Purple sea moss is harvested and then deliberately dried in the shade to preserve its deep natural pigments. Those pigments are anthocyanins, the same class of water-soluble antioxidants that color blueberries, blackberries and red cabbage. Our purple sea moss is Chondrus crispus, the cold-water variety from rocky North Atlantic coastlines such as Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, Atlantic Canada and Maine. Anthocyanins are its dominant compound, and they point to three things that matter for whole-body and respiratory wellness:

  • A healthy inflammatory response. Anthocyanins help support the body's inflammatory balance at the tissue level.*
  • Antioxidant protection. Every breath exposes the lungs directly to oxygen, airborne particles and smoke, and that exposure generates free radicals. Anthocyanins help neutralize free radicals and give this highly exposed tissue a layer of antioxidant defense.*
  • Vascular and tissue integrity. Gas exchange depends on a vast, fragile network of capillaries wrapped around the air sacs of the lungs. Purple supports the integrity of vascular and connective tissue, helping delicate structures stay resilient.*

The spectrum side by side

  • Gold: sun-bleached, mineral salts, supports respiratory comfort. A helpful companion.*
  • Green: shade-dried, chlorophyll, supports oxygen transport and gut health. A helpful companion.*
  • Purple: shade-dried, anthocyanins, supports a healthy inflammatory response and tissue integrity. The foundation.*

Why we build on purple

Lay the three side by side and the logic is clear. Gold supports clearing what is already there. Green supports oxygen movement through the whole system. Both are valuable and neither is wrong, but both work on the downstream side of everyday stress. Purple is the one that works at the level of the tissue itself, supporting a calm inflammatory response while protecting the body's delicate, highly exposed structures.*

Our view is that wellness starts with calm, protected, resilient tissue. You can keep supporting clearing and oxygenation, but if the tissue itself is not supported, you are managing the surface instead of building resilience. That is foundational work, and purple is the color that does it.*

This is why purple sea moss anchors our Respiratory line, and it is the same reasoning that led us to choose purple for our Inflammation line. Purple does the deep, protective work, the soothing mucilage shared by all sea moss adds comfort on top, and where clearing or oxygenation support is wanted, yellow and green remain excellent companions.* Our products are made in the USA with international ingredients in a GMP facility and third-party tested for purity, potency and heavy metals.
